Hugo van Dorsser
Self-taught in painting, Van Dorsser’s style is insular, referential and fluidly developing. His practice is rooted in connotations of popular imagery, sharp graphics and morphed figures, denoting reference to the collages of Basquiat, the iterative nature of Warhol and the disjointed portraiture of Condo. The thematic cacophony within his work can challenge the mind, perplex perception and question our recognition. Hugo Van Dorsser’s work is at the intersection of satirical and calculated, alluring audiences into conversation with concealed narratives, yet giving a sense that this is all somehow none of one’s business.
Born in Ōtautahi Christchurch, Hugo now lives and works in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland.
